The tiny village of Loxhore near Barnstaple is the best village in Devon - and that's official.

Loxhore (population 180) has been named the 2006 Calor Village of the Year for Devon.

Judges described the village as "delightful" and said it appeared like a "wonderful place to live" - even though it has no pub or shop, no school and no bus service.

Loxhore beat off the challenge of villages across Devon for the title, which is awarded to villages with the best community spirit.

Loddiswell in South Devon and Halberton near Tiverton in the east of the county were announced as joint runners-up.

"We're immensely proud of what we've achieved," said Headley McLourin, chairman of the Loxhore Village Hall Committee.

"We haven't got a school or a shop or even a bus service, but the community has pulled together and made it work for us.

"The community spirit here is fantastic. Unlike other places, absolutely everyone is welcome in Loxhore.

"There are three old established families here which go back several generations and that helps form a core."

The village hall is the hub of the community hosting events every month including yoga classes, pudding evenings, barn dances and whist drives.

It's also the venue for the village's four skittles teams (age range 12 to 70) and the recently reconstituted Women's Institute.

The village hall is housed in the former school which closed down in the 1950s. Since then it's been extended and improved several times.

Most recently £55,000 was raised to improve the improve the kitchen, level the floors and install disabled access.

As winners of the competition, the village receives £500 towards community projects and will now compete against all the other county winners for the national title. A first prize of £7,000 is up for grabs.

Judges commented: "Loxhore is a delightful village in North Devon. In spite of its tiny population - about 180 in the whole parish, it is a powerhouse of activity and goodwill and has achieved much in building a community life for its inhabitants.

"Loxhore is a community where everyone is included and following our visit, we left with the feeling that this is a wonderful place to live.

"In spite of having no shop or pub and little industry (although the businesses that there are in the village such as B&B, IT and a haulage firm are thriving), this small community has such a lively and positive outlook."
